Intel driving Linux infotainment systems into cars

Intel driving Linux infotainment systems to cars

Now we going to use linux in our cars instead of in our computers, our phones, our Wi-Fi equipment, our TiVos. Intel have been working with automotive industries to advance in vehicle infotainment with linux-based, interoperable hardware and software called Open Infotainment Platforms (OIP) systems.

It make possible for car manufacturers to bring new infotainment products to meet consumer demands. The automobile industry foccuss towards adding media and information in cars.

Car manufacturers want to extend the media digital experience into the automobile and making it so that these devices are always connected to the Internet.

These devices will use Linux, and support the full TCP/IP network. Intel plans on using mobile WiMax for internet connectivity. The idea is that lots of people will bring their mobile devices into their cars. If the devices have the same architecture as those in the dashboard, users will be able to transfer music, maps, and other data between cars and mobile devices.

Consumers expect a different environment in their car. Sure, people still buy cars because of mileage and brand, but now they also want up-to-date infotainment.

Besides built-in GPS for example, find the closest pizza place that's still open with your built-in GPS/MID.

Toshiba eyes fuel cells, Cell-based TV by 2009

Toshiba eyes fuel cells, cell-based TV by 2009

Toshiba plans to begin direct methanol fuel cells and television based on the powerful cell microprocessor in large amount.
Toshiba has been developing the fuel cells and cell chip and their readiness for commercial use coupled with continuing advances in the company's chip making expertise are expected to be key drivers behind growth in toshiba's digital products and electronic devices divisions.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) produce electricity from a reaction between methanol, water and air. The only by-products of the reaction are a small amount of water vapor and carbon dioxide, so the fuel cells are typically seen as a much greener form of energy than traditional batteries. A big advantage of DMFCs is that they can be replenished with a new cartridge of methanol in seconds.

The spurs engine is a coprocessor that's a chip designed to sit alongside a main processor in a system and handle heavy jobs like real-time graphics processing and video manipulation. Inside the chip there are four processor cores of the same type used in the cell chip and a hardware codec for encoding and decoding high-definition MPEG2 and H.264 video streams. Toshiba said it will launch a laptop PC that features the spurs engine.

Toshiba also planning to launch a new 1.8-inch solid-state disk (SSD) drive using multilevel NAND flash memory chips. Such chips can hold two bits of data in each cell, doubling the storage capacity within a given space.Toshiba to store up to 128G bytes in the first drives using multilevel memory.

Cisco takes service routers to the edge

Cisco takes service routers to the edge

Cisco has unveiled its Aggregation Services Router 1000 at the CeBIT show in Hanover designed for service provider and enterprise edge network deployment.

The networking firm said that the new router is purpose-built for edge networks and took over five years to develop at a cost of $250m.

The ASR 1000 Series is driven by the new QuantumFlow processor, an integrated and programmable router and service engine, and features software virtualisation to enable instant-on provisioning and simultaneous use of a wide range of service functionality.

These services include firewall, IPSec virtual private networks, deep-packet inspection and Session Border Control.

Cisco believes that embedding these features into a single appliance makes it easier to deploy and manage, as well as saving on capital costs and operations expenses.

"Next-generation networks will enable a broad range of services in a wide variety of combinations, many requiring high-quality, high-definition, bidirectional communication to meet customer demands," said Shin Hashomoto, executive vice president at NTT.

"In contrast to conventional best-effort approaches, we believe it will be necessary for the edge of network to perform dynamic quality control to flexibly and securely enable aggregation of traffic from broadband services and converged communications."

The Cisco ASR 1000 combines all the necessary service features into a single router platform, resulting in a substantial increase in IP forwarding performance, according to the networking giant.

The device can also simplify network design because a single router can be used in different hardware deployments and provide different services based on installed software.

The Cisco ASR 1000 series will be generally available in April 2008 in two, four and six rack unit sizes. Pricing starts at $35,000.

Finally, a reason to start drinking alcohol

Finally, a reason to start drinking alcohol

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who do not drink alcohol may finally have a reason to start -- a study published on Friday shows non-drinkers who begin taking the occasional tipple live longer and are less likely to develop heart disease.

People who started drinking in middle age were 38 percent less likely to have a heart attack or other serious heart event than abstainers -- even if they were overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure or other heart risks, Dr. Dana King of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and colleagues found.

Many studies have shown that light to moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers, but every time, the researchers have cautioned that there is no reason for the abstinent to start drinking.

Now there may be, said King.

"This study certainly shifts the balance a little bit," King said in a telephone interview.

King's team studied the medical records of 7,697 people between 45 and 64 who began as non-drinkers as part of a larger study. Over 10 years, 6 percent of these volunteers began drinking, King's team reported in the American Journal of Medicine.

King said he does not know why some of the volunteers started drinking. "This was a natural experiment," he said.

"Over the next four years we tracked the new drinkers and when we compared them to the persistent non-drinkers, there was a 38 percent drop in new cardiovascular disease."

The findings held even when the researchers factored in heart disease risks such as smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, race, education levels, exercise and cholesterol.

Several of the volunteers had more than one risk factor and still benefited from adding alcohol, King said.

FEW BINGERS

Fewer than one percent of people in the study drank more than is recommended, King said. Recommended amounts equal a drink or two a day by most guidelines.

"Half of them were wine drinkers only. There was a much bigger benefit for wine-only drinkers," he added.

Now King's team has started a new study in which his team will randomly assign non-drinkers to start either having a glass of wine a day, a glass of grape juice, or grape juice spiked with antioxidants, compounds believed to help fight heart disease.

But the findings do not mean people should drink freely, King said. Another study published this week supports that advice. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that how much and how often people drink affects their risk of death from several causes.

Their study of 44,000 people showed that men who had five or more drinks on days they did drink were 30 percent more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than men who had just one drink a day -- regardless of what their average drinking intake was.

Writing in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, the team at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Cancer Institute found that regular, moderate drinking was healthier than having the occasional binge.

Even men who drank every single day of the year were 20 percent less likely to die of heart disease than men who drank just one to 36 days per year -- if they drank moderately.

"Taken together, our results reinforce the importance of drinking in moderation," the researchers wrote.

Apple iPhone targets RIM with corporate e-mail

Apple iPhone targets RIM with corporate e-mail

(Reuters) - Apple Inc said on Thursday its iPhone soon will support corporate e-mail, targeting a new market and challenging the dominance of Research In Motion Ltd's popular Blackberry devices.

Apple also said it will roll out tools for developers to create software for the iPhone, news that was accompanied by a pledge from legendary venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers to set up a $100 million "iFund" to back iPhone software start-ups.

"This takes the iPhone from being not really in the running in the enterprise to being very much in the run ning and gives RIM a serious challenge," Van Baker, an analyst with market research firm Gartner.

The move would help Apple hit its goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of this year, a target some analysts have questioned if the weakening U.S. economy takes a toll on consumer spending.

"Apple answered the majority of objections that most IT professionals had to the iPhone as an enterprise device," Baker said.

The shares of RIM , whose Blackberry products are widely used in corporations, fell 3.8 percent to $98.72 on the news on Nasdaq. The shares of Apple, which also makes iPod media players and Macintosh computers, fell 2.9 percent to $120.93.

Apple said the iPhone would work with Microsoft Corp's Exchange software for managing business e-mails, contacts and calendars and "pushing" that information to handheld devices.

"We are doing all of these things with the next release of iPhone software," Phil Schiller, vice president of global marketing for Apple, said at the company's headquarters. "I think enterprise customers are going to be pretty excited."

The new programming tools are also seen as a way to build more interest in the iPhone, which has so far only been able to run outside programs through the Web browser. The tool kit will let software makers write applications that can tap more of the iPhone's capabilities, such as its touch-sensitive screen and motion sensors.

"Starting today, we are opening up the same native (interfaces) and tools that we use internally to build all our iPhone applications," said Scott Forstall, vice president of iPhone software.

Programs will only be available through a new "apps store" on the iPhone and in Apple's iTunes software that currently sells music and videos. Apple will keep 30 percent of revenue, with the rest going to developers.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs dismissed concerns the company was keeping too tight of a grip on iPhone software distribution.

"As a developer, your dream is to get your app in front of every iPhone user and hopefully they love it and buy it. That's not possible today. Even big developers would have trouble getting in front of every iPhone user," Jobs said.

"Are there going to be limitations? Of course. There are some apps we're not going to distribute. Porn, malicious apps."

John Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins and one of Silicon Valley's most famous venture capitalists, said his firm started the $100 million iFund out of belief that the iPhone would prove to be a long-lived platform.

"We believe the mobile Internet is a platform and that the iPhone is the best instance of that," added Kleiner Perkins partner Matt Murphy, who will manage the fund.

Pioneer to post loss, exit plasma display production

Pioneer to post loss, exit plasma display production

TOKYO (Reuters) - Consumer electronics maker Pioneer Corp said it would fall into the red for the fourth straight year on costs to scrap production of plasma displays as it rejigs its strategy in the cut-throat flat TV market.

Pioneer is expected to now turn to Panasonic brand maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co to supply it with panels for its plasma TVs, thereby allowing it to focus on design and marketing and save on production costs.

Pioneer is the world's fifth-biggest plasma TV maker, but it has been struggling to compete with larger rivals such as plasma industry leader Matsushita and LG Electronics , which can leverage economies of scale.

The company, which also makes home stereos and car electronics, said it now expects to post a group net loss of 15 billion yen ($146 million) for the year to March 31, compared with its previous forecast of a 6 billion yen profit.

The new forecast reflects 19 billion yen in losses to write down the value of its plasma panel production facilities.

"This move will allow us to transform our business model for displays from vertically integrated, capital-intensive operations to a leaner business model geared to making value-added product proposals," Pioneer said in a news release.

The decision to end production of plasma panels was widely flagged by the media, including Reuters, earlier in the week.

The move follows a deal struck last year with Sharp Corp under which Sharp will supply Pioneer with liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, allowing Pioneer to round out its product line-up with LCD TVs.

But pulling out of plasma production marks a major shift in Pioneer's strategy. The company has spent a little over 100 billion yen to build four plasma panel production lines and to buy two more lines from NEC Corp.

Japanese TV makers have been undergoing a realignment as top manufacturers with ample output capacity such as Matsushita and Sharp look for panel buyers, while midtier players seek ways to obtain display panels without making hefty initial investments.

Pioneer said it would now refocus its resources on more promising businesses such as car electronics and audio equipment.

Shares of Pioneer closed Friday down 5 percent at 1,151 yen ahead of the announcement, but had surged 16 percent in the previous three days on reports it would cease making plasma panels to cut losses in its flat-TV business.

The Nikkei newspaper reported earlier on Friday that Pioneer and Matsushita were also planning to jointly develop low-cost and high-quality panels for shipment as early as 2009, and that Pioneer engineers could be transferred to Matsushita.

Telecom watchdog wants orderly growth of cable TV

Telecom watchdog wants orderly growth of cable TV

A consultation paper inviting comments and suggestions to better regulate the cable television service business in the country and help its orderly growth was circulated by the telecom watchdog Tuesday.

"An appropriate regulatory framework to enable the orderly growth of the sector is need of the hour," said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that issued the paper among industry stakeholders.

"The provisions for registration, information systems for monitoring of cable TV industry, customer grievance redressal and quality of service etc need immediate attention," the watchdog said in a statement.

"There is a scope for growth in the cable TV sector in view of new technologies available today. The investment opportunities in the sector have also increased. A supportive regulatory environment will facilitate the constructive growth."

Indian cable TV space is currently dominated by cable TV operators, who transmit their signals from various platforms - such as the direct-to-home (DTH) companies, the state-run terrestrial broadcaster and TV through the Internet protocol, among others.

With easy access and availability to modern technologies, the growth of cable TV can be exponential, provided issues such as its regulation, service quality and consumers grievances are handled properly, the watchdog said.

The consultation paper seeks to identify issues such as effective implementation of a regulatory body and transparency in all segments of cable TV services such as registration, service quality monitoring and extension of an appellate panel.

It has also sought the industry's views on setting up an effective system that can redress consumer grievances and create a new set of rules and regulations for multiple service operators.
